KING JOHN
By William Shakespeare
Northwest Classical Theatre, Portland, OR

PRODUCTION NOTES

In King John, there is a striking similarity between the 11th Century ruling family of Henry II and the contemporary dynasties of The Roosevelt, Kennedy, and Bush families. King John came from a family with a powerful father, a domineering mother and competitive sons determined to carry on the family power base.  John is a shadow of the man his father was, his claim on the throne is doubtful at best, his relationship with God is troubled and spiteful, and he starts a war in order to keep his throne then makes backhanded deals that his enemy cannot refuse; he lies to everyone and is respected by no one. Sound familiar?

Ms. Huffman moved the action forward to the modern era of a media-fueled war. The action is played out on TV while leaders make covert deals behind the scenes, hold press conferences for peace and John plots murder in his bid for ultimate power. Winner of 2012 Drammy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Dana Millican as Constance.
