PRODUCTION NOTES

Set in a mythical bronze age Troy, where the women of the conquered city were now captives to the Greeks, including the infamous Helen, this large scale production followed the traditional Greek theatre form of singing, dancing chorus, the use of masks and high cothurni shoes.

 

Ms. Huffman extended those devices to create a unique and fascinating culture where the women of the city wore two faces: one their own, painted in the style depicted on ancient frescos and the other a neutral mask worn on the back of their head. The back mask allowed the women to hide the depth of their grief and pain from the conquerors who were enslaving them, much as a burka does, giving the production a fascinating look into a distant culture.

 

With haunting music by composer Susan Hurley, Drammy award-winning costumes by Sarah Gahagen and live drums the production was critically acclaimed playing to capacity crowds, including over 2000 students from surrounding schools in the Portland area.
