Elizabeth and her colleague, Stuart W. Howard, founded the Beacon Project in 1985 in New York City.

Dedicated to staging rarely produced classics as well as premiering new plays with heightened language and poetry, the company produced four world premieres and four neglected classical plays during its five years in operation.

The Beacon Project became the recipient of New York State Council for the Arts grants and was included in the New York Times listings under "Theatre Companies to Watch"
